Wake up to the smell of coffee, the birds chirping, the fresh dew in the grass, and hikes awaiting! Yes, that can all be yours on this camping trip. You may be the first out of the tent in the morning, who knows. Your awakening neighbors will appreciate you firing up the coffee pot. Night time campfires are always a highlight.
We are going back to Roan Mountain Tennessee State Park again! It has been four years since our last trek there. Those of you that went in 2015 remember the urban feel to the layout of the tents. Well, this time we are expanding to a more rural feel. We have three (yes 3!) group sites reserved for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Arrive either Thursday or Friday.
This is an excellent area for hiking. One day we will hike the scenic high elevation balds along the Appalachian Trail. Parking for this trail is a 10-mile drive from the campground. Elevation of Roan Mountain is 6,285 feet. There are plenty of other trails in the area for other day(s). (It is also a good idea to bring hiking shoes that don’t have the sole release feature. Not naming anyone!)
Travel, tent, food, and other camping needs are the responsibility of each camper.
Carpooling is encouraged. The State Park is approximately 30 miles west of Boone, and 222 miles from Raleigh. Driving time is approximately four hours each way.
